Collectible Railroad Bonds and Jay Cooke

The nation was slowly healing its wounds and recovering from the disastrous effects of the Civil War. Visionaries of the period looked to the future and the opportunities available in a recovering nation’s expansion. Naturally so, men of stout hearts looked West, and so it is no surprise that the man who successfully orchestrated the Union effort in selling bonds to finance the war turned his eye toward his next great challenge, the resurrection of the Northern Pacific Railroad.

After years of failed attempts at financing the road, the future of the company lie in doubt. Jay Cooke arrived on the scene, successfully lobbying Congress for legislative change which would facilitate his grand plan for financing the construction of the road. Thus the first tracks of what would become America’s second transcontinental railroad were laid. As construction continued, rising costs necessitated the need for constantly growing amounts of capital and Jay Cooke boldly took the lead. His optimism for the costly project exceeded even his firm’s abilities to muster the financial resources to continue in the face of ever-increasing fears of failure by the banking community.

Ultimately, with Jay Cooke & Company’s fortunes closely tied to the Northern Pacific Project, the firm failed and was forced into bankruptcy and in some part, contributed to the onset of the financial panic of 1873.

Collectible Bahamian $3 dollar

The Bahamas' unit of currency is the Bahamian dollar ($B) which is based on the U.S. dollar. One Bahamian dollar equals 100 Bahamian cents (pennies). Collectible World War II War Bond

War bonds are debt securities issued by a government for the purpose of financing military operations during times of war.

During WW II, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau, Jr. planned a national defense bond program in the fall of 1940. The intent was to unite the attractiveness of the baby bonds that had been implemented in the interwar period with the patriotic element of the Liberty Bonds from WW I.

The Treasury began marketing the previously successful baby bonds as "defense bonds". Three new series of bond notes, Series E, F and G, would be introduced, of which Series E would be targeted at individuals as "defense bonds".

Collectible Chinese Bonds

Imperial Chinese Government Hukuang Railways bonds were issued in 1911 by banks in London, Berlin, Paris and New York, with serial numbers running into the six digits, of which hundreds if not thousands appear to have survived. A few bear New York State adhesive revenue stamps; shown here is a New York issue £100 bond with Secured Debt $1 and Investments $1 stamps paying New York’s Investments tax in 1917 and 1918; this secured for the bondholder exemption from that state’s onerous personal property tax.

Coupon bonds of this era are generally large and spectacular—American bonds typically measure about 10 by 15 inches—but this one sets new standards on both scores. It is huge, some 16 by 22 inches as shown. Its design and execution by security printers Waterlow & Sons of London are equally impressive, featuring the facsimile seals and signatures of China’s Minister of Posts and Communications and its Minister in Washington.

Bond: China, 1912 £20 5% Bond printed by J. Verschueren, Anvers. Large format. Condition: Excellent! Price upon request.

Germany Facing Lawsuit Over Decades-Old Bond Default

World Holdings filed an amended complaint in the case on June 3, 2008, in federal court in Miami to obtain payment on U.S. Gold bearer bonds, known as Dawes Bonds and Young Bonds, that Germany issued to thousands of individual American and other investors in 1924 and 1930. The bonds were bearer bonds sold in the United States, traded on the New York Stock Exchange and backed by the full faith and credit of Germany.

World Holdings currently owns or controls a large number of Dawes and Young Bonds sold to U.S. purchasers and is charging Germany with breach of contract based on the country's alleged default of its obligation to pay the outstanding principal and accrued interest on these bonds.

The lawsuit seeks damages in the amount of outstanding principal and accrued interest.

About Old Stocks and Shares Certificates

Here is an explanation of some differences in the use of the words 'stock' and 'share' across the centuries and currently in Britain and in the USA, When the first English 'joint stock companies' were formed in the 16th century, stock meant the owners' capital in the company -- what we now call equity. This stock was divided into parts or shares.

In the 19th century, American certificates for shares of stock were at first called c=share certificates, but later came to be called stock certificates (even though 'shares' are often mentioned in the text of the certificates).

The British continued to call them share certificates, even though they trade them through stockbrokers in a stock exchange. 'Stock' in Britain now generally means loan capital -- loan stock, debenture stock, or government stock.

Texas - Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna Autographed Bonds

Antonio de Padua María Severino López de Santa Anna y Pérez de Lebrón (21 February 1794 – 21 June 1876),[1] often known as Santa Anna[2] or López de Santa Anna, was a Mexican political leader, general and President who greatly influenced early Mexican and Spanish politics and government. He first fought against the independence from Spain, and then supported it. He rose to the ranks of general and president at various times over a turbulent 40-year career. He was President of Mexico on seven non-consecutive occasions over a period of 22 years.

Santa Anna boldly signs this extremely graphic bond. It is without doubt the most impressive and ornate of all autographed stock or bonds. This $500 bond was issued in 1866 from New York City while Santa Anna was living in exile. While he schemed to depose Emperor Maximilian, he issued these bonds in hopes of regaining power. In these attempts, he was captured and sentenced to death. Still, he was released and allowed to retire to New York and later when blind, he died in poverty and neglect. Of course, we remember him because of his success over the Texans at the Alamo and later his defeat and capture by Sam Houston at San Jacinto in 1836. Found in an old leather container in Texas, this Santa Anna signed American bond is fully issued, uncancelled, has no folds, has full margins and is in Superb condition.
