More on the Galveston, Houston and Henderson Railroad Company

$100 Bond printed by John F. Trow. Several rows of coupons. English at front and French on back.
Particularly Choice Condition!

The property of the carrier was operated by its own organization from December 1, 1882, to March 6, 1883; from the latter date to December 22, 1895, it was operated by the International and Great Northern Railroad Company under an operating agreement. During the period from December 23, 1895, to December 31, 1917, it was operated by its own organization. On January 1, 1918, its common-carrier property was taken over for operation by the United States Railroad Administration, which still operates it on date of valuation. As of date of valuation no separation has been made between the corporate accounts and those of the United States Railroad Administration.

Corporate history: The carrier was organized December 1, 1882, by Russell Sage and Jay Gould and associates under the original charter granted to the Galveston, Houston and Henderson Railroad Company (of 1853), for the purpose of acquiring the property of the Galveston, Houston and Henderson Railroad Company (of 1871).

It is particularly interesting to note that most of these bonds have been bought up by speculators. As a result, they are now extremely rare.

This collectible Cairo & Norfolk Railroad bond $100 5% Gold Uncancelled Bond is written in both English and French. Collins Prss. 30 or so coupons.

"Cairo & Norfolk. — It is the Intention of this new company to build an independent trunk line from the Mississippi river at or near the mouth of the Ohio in Kentucky through Kentucky and Virginia to the Atlantic seaboard at Norfolk, Va., about 850 miles. Branch lines aggregating 700 or 800 miles are also planned as feeders.

The plans for immediate work contemplate the construction of about 400 miles of main line from Wlckliffe and Fort Jefferson, Ky., about four miles south of Cairo, 111., to some point on the Kentucky-Virginia line, probably Bristol. Preliminary lines have been run over the territory and it is stated that a direct route is easily obtained with low grades and every advantage to heavy traffic.

It is the intention to construct the line according to most approved standards with heavy rail, steel and concrete bridges and rock ballasted track. The route lies through a large number of thriving towns in Kentucky and traverses the rich tobacco growing sections of the state. L. W. Goode, president, 111 Broadway, New York." Collectible Andrew Carnegie and United Steel Gold Bond

If we had to pick the top 10 U. S. stocks or bonds of all time, this would be one of our top choices!

Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919), Manufacturer and Philanthropist. Began an illustrious career as a bobbin boy at age 13, then became a self taught telegrapher with the Pennsylvania Railroad. In 1853-65, he introduced use of the Pullman sleeping cars, organized the military telegraph department, and was active in transporting troops during the Civil War. After leaving the railroad, he focused on iron and then the steel industry.

His policy of “putting all his eggs in one basket, and then watching the basket” was extremely successful.

By 1889 steel production in the U.S. was first in the world, and in 1901 he sold his company, Carnegie Company to the U.S. Steel Corporation for $250 million. The Carnegie Foundation of New York donated millions to scientific research, the advancement of teaching, the furthering of international peace, and the reward of heroic acts. The foundation is well known for building public libraries. This historic bond is dated 1901, the very year that he sold his company.

This beautiful $100,000 5% United States Steel Gold Bond is issued to Andrew Carnegie, but not signed. The rarity of Carnegie stocks and bonds is well known. A while back, two signed examples of this bond were sold to collectors at $125,000 per bond! Neatly stamp and hole cancelled. The graphics and cranberry red color are truly exceptional. Fresh Excellent Condition. A portrait of Carnegie is included.

Special Price! For more information visit our web site, http://www.glabarre.com, or call George LaBarre at 1-800-717-9529.

Collectible Railroad Bonds and Jay Cooke

The nation was slowly healing its wounds and recovering from the disastrous effects of the Civil War. Visionaries of the period looked to the future and the opportunities available in a recovering nation’s expansion. Naturally so, men of stout hearts looked West, and so it is no surprise that the man who successfully orchestrated the Union effort in selling bonds to finance the war turned his eye toward his next great challenge, the resurrection of the Northern Pacific Railroad.

After years of failed attempts at financing the road, the future of the company lie in doubt. Jay Cooke arrived on the scene, successfully lobbying Congress for legislative change which would facilitate his grand plan for financing the construction of the road. Thus the first tracks of what would become America’s second transcontinental railroad were laid. As construction continued, rising costs necessitated the need for constantly growing amounts of capital and Jay Cooke boldly took the lead. His optimism for the costly project exceeded even his firm’s abilities to muster the financial resources to continue in the face of ever-increasing fears of failure by the banking community.

Ultimately, with Jay Cooke & Company’s fortunes closely tied to the Northern Pacific Project, the firm failed and was forced into bankruptcy and in some part, contributed to the onset of the financial panic of 1873.
