J. Pierpont Morgan - 100 Year Railroad Bond

J. Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913), Banker, Connoisseur of Art, son of Junius S. Morgan. Involved in his early years in a broad range of finance, his company, J. P. Morgan & Co. became one of the most powerful banking houses in the world. He engaged in several dubious pieces of business during the Civil War period, but was essentially an organizer and stabilizing force in business.

After the failure of Jay Cooke's firm, Morgan's firm became dominant in government financing and in financing railroads. Among his most daring undertakings was the formation of the US Steel Corp. in 1901. Morgan's personal influence was a decisive factor in overcoming the money panic of 1907. Superb 100 year bond of the New Jersey Junction Railroad dated 1886, nearly four pages of attractive coupons remaining. The bond is boldly signed at back by J. Pierpont Morgan and H. C. Fahnstock as Trustees.

A large impressive vignette of a harbor scene is also at the back. Graphically beautiful both front and back. Includes nice portraits of both Morgan and Fahnstock. Superb Near Mint Condition!!! Any other type of stock or bond signed by Morgan will sell in the $2,000 or more range.

This bond is a Great Value at this Special Price: $1300.00

Rare Coney Island and Gravesend Railway Bank Note

The first railroad to reach Coney Island was actually cars pulled by horses in 1860. The terminal was at Van Sicklen, which at the time was near the beach. However, as the sandbar that protected West Brighton filled in and the beach widened, the present day location of the terminal is far inland.

1773 Insurance Promissory Note

1773 Insurance Promissory Note

This note may be signed by John Coffin at the age of 17? Possibly, but would require further research. At least, this is a rare Boston insurance related note of 1773. John Coffin (1756-1838), Massachusetts Loyalist, had gone to sea as a boy and by the time he was 18 was given command of a ship. In 1775, his ship took part in bringing nearly a whole regiment under General Howe to Boston. He fought gallantly at Bunker Hill for the British. Later, it is said that the Colonials offered $10,000 for his head. In the War of 1812 he raised 700 men. At his death in 1838, he was the oldest general in the British army!

A John Coffin signed this very early “Promise to pay to Nathaniel Barber, or Bearer” 1773 Premium of Insurance note. Likely to insure cargo of a ship. It would be especially exciting to verify whether this is the very same Coffin. Regardless, this is the earliest American Insurance related piece we’ve had. Rare! Choice Condition!

Selling to a Dealer

Selling to a dealer is often the quickest and simplest way to dispose of an unwanted piece. But a dealer will not be very keen on buying a piece that he already has in stock. If he is offered a whole collection, he will give a price that reflects the speed and ease of re-selling -- better pieces usually sell quickly, common or unattractive pieces may stay on his shelves for years; his offer will be calculated accordingly.

Sometimes a dealer will be willing to sell your pieces for you on commission. Tell the dealer what you have in mind, and he will be able to advise you as to the best way to sell.

$100 Bond printed by John F. Trow

It is particularly interesting to note that most of these bonds have been bought up by speculators. As a result, they are now extremely rare. The railroad operated by the Galveston, Houston and Henderson Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, consists principally of a single-track, steam railroad, located in southeastern Texas, extending from Houston to Galveston.

The wholly-owned property consists of that portion of the main line projecting from Houston to the beginning of the joint causeway zone at Virginia Point and from the end of the joint causeway zone to Thirty-third Street on Galveston Island, aggregating 46.527 miles of road. The separated sections are connected by means of a concrete causeway with approaches about 2 miles in length across Galveston Bay which in part is jointly owned and used by the carrier, The Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway Company, and the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway Company.

Located within the joint causeway zone are 2.539 undivided miles of road jointly owned with these same carriers. This company grants to The Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railway Company of Texas and the International and Great Northern Railway Company the joint use of its tracks and facilities between Houston and Galveston, Tex. On the other hand, it uses under agreements, passenger and freight terminals of other carriers at Houston and Galvestion. The carrier wholly owns 125.800 miles of all tracks, all of which it uses. It also wholly uses but does not own 0.378 mile of all tracks owned by an industry, jointly owns and uses with other carriers 7.668 undivided miles of all tracks, and jointly uses but does not own an undivided interest in 0.110 mile of all tracks. The property of the carrier was operated by its own organization from December 1, 1882, to March 6, 1883; from the latter date to December 22, 1895, it was operated by the International and Great Northern Railroad Company under an operating agreement. During the period from December 23, 1895, to December 31, 1917, it was operated by its own organization. On January 1, 1918, its common-carrier property was taken over for operation by the United States Railroad Administration, which still operates it on date of valuation. As of date of valuation no separation has been made between the corporate accounts and those of the United States Railroad Administration.

The carrier was organized December 1, 1882, by Russell Sage and Jay Gould and associates under the original charter granted to the Galveston, Houston and Henderson Railroad Company (of 1853), for the purpose of acquiring the property of the Galveston, Houston and Henderson Railroad Company (of 1871). $100 Bond printed by John F. History of Stock and Bond Printing

The first printing plates for binds and shares were made on blocks of dense wood. The artists first drew designs on smooth blocks, then carved the excess material away. The desired images remained as raised surfaces, which could be inked and transferred to paper.

Later, engravers developed ways to create better images by cutting into polished blocks of limestone.

Lithographs were created by squeezing ink into the grooves of the stones. This took considerable skill, but the results were better than from the woodcuts. However, the printing was still not very clear, and thus easy for forgers to copy.

More Stock and Bond History

The earliest incorporated joint stock company known is Stora Kopparberg Berslag,m a Swedish copper mine, which received its charter in 1347, although a record of a trade in its shares exists from 1288.

The first English joint stock company was chartered in 1555 to trade with Russia and beyond. About 1600, great trading companies were founded in England, Holland and France.

The oldest known scripophily pieces are from around 1600, but most of the earliest collectible bonds and shares, mainly from England, France, Holland, and Italy date from the late 17th century.

A lot of collectible material exists from the 18th century, almost all of it from these four countries, plus Spain, Portugal, Belgium, and the USA.

(Photo: This 18th century Spanish share was issued in Barcelona)

The period 1800-1940 is the source of the great majority of the pieces we can collect. Post-1940 pieces are generally of less interest, but the occasional modern share is sought by collectors.

More History...

State bonds were traded in Venice from the mid-13th century, and a little later in other Italian city states. Banks were formed in Italy in the 14th and 15th centuries with their capital in shares.

German mining shares were bought and sold at trade fairs in the 15th century, and city bonds in France about the same time.

In 1555, a huge French royal loan was floated, yielding 16% and crating a frenzied market for a while. The first permanent stock exchange was set up in Antwerp at that time also.

History of Collecting Old Stocks and Bonds

Ownership in shares of businesses is believed to go back to at least 2000 BC. In Rome in the second century BC there was active trading in the shares of business companies which were legal entities, some of them huge enterprises owning thousands of slaves. These companies faded away during Rome's Imperial period and their like did not reappear until after the Dark Ages.

The modern history of shares dates from the late 10th century AD, in the Italian port of Amalfi, where maritime ventures were divided into shares which were bought and sold, usually by their captains and merchants.

This became the normal way to fund voyages throughout Europe. The Pilgrim Fathers' Mayflower and Sir Francis Drake's global voyages were funded in this way. These ventures were not companies with a legal status independent of their owners, however, but a form of unincorporated partnership.

Scripophily Is New

While some people began collecting old bonds and shares as early as the 1930s, scripophily itself is relatively new. In 1961, Confederate and Southern States bonds were catalogued for Civil War enthusiasts, and in 1975-76 researchers in Germany showed that fascinating unredeemed Imperial Russian and Chinese bonds could be collected.

Compared with coins (a hobby for more than 400 years) and paper money and stamps (popular for more than a century and a half) bond and share collecting is very new indeed.

Should I Collect Issued or Unissued Certificates

Many collectors feel that unissued and partly issued material is less 'valid' than issued certificates, and the prices are generally lower. Nevertheless, unissueds are sometimes the only examples available of a certificate, or a rare form of a common issued piece (in particular, Chinese bonds). Specimens and proofs, especially of famous printers such as the American Banknote Company, can command prices well above issued examples. They are usually in immaculate condition.

Number issued: Bonds of a small issue, or the shares of a small company, will usually be rarer than those where hundreds of thousands were issued. The face of a bond often states how many were issued. Share certificates as well as bonds bear a serial number. However, keep in mind this is a rough guideline.

Collectible Jay Gould Autograph

Jay Gould (1836-1892) Financier. As a youth, was involved in surveying and showed precocious skill in money-making. He began speculating in railroads post 1860. His operations became spectacular when in 1867 with James Fisk he became a director of the Erie Railroad, of which Daniel Drew was treasurer and controlling agent.

In the ensuing struggle for control with Cornelius Vanderbilt, Gould supplied the strategic imagination. Defying a court injunction, Gould, Fisk and Drew broke Vanderbilt's attempted corner by flinging 50,000 Erie shares on the market in March 1868. Gould, by lavish bribes, then effected passage of a bill by the New York legislature legalizing the recent issue of Erie stock and forbidding union of the Erie and the New York Central. This all led to the 1869 attempt to corner the gold market, bringing on the disastrous panic of Black Friday (September 24).

By 1890 he owned half of the railroad mileage in the Southwest. He was practically full owner of the New York City elevated railways, and controlled the Western Union Telegraph Co.

This 1880s stock is neatly hole and stamp cancelled, Signature at front as President. Very Fine Condition. A nice portrait of Gould is included. Nicer than normally found. Popular!
