Samuel Jones Tilden, 1814 – 1886, was the Democratic candidate in the disputed presidential election of 1876, the most controversial American election of the 19th century.
A political reformer, he was a Bourbon Democrat, representing business interests, banking and railroad goals, and laissez-faire capitalism. Tilden worked closely with the New York City business community, worked to keep taxes low, and led the fight against the corruption of Tammany Hall.
